The Flux is on its way...

Well, after much internal debate, reading reviews online and watching videos of the thing in action, I finally decided that for my upcoming birthday, my gift (from everyone, collectively) would be the HPI Savage Flux HP that I wrote about, last time.

My first attraction to R/C when getting into the hobby last year was racing; however, I have since found I just really get a kick out of driving the things - not merely racing. This year, my racing schedule has been impacted quite a lot by other things and I haven't been able to get to the track the way I was, early on. I can forsee that changing, but not right away. Every now and then, though, I get the urge to drive and the fact is, I don't want to take these racing trucks out and drive them through the nearby dirt trails. They aren't designed or set up for "bashing" - they're racers. I weighed the significantly less expensive option of getting a car set up for RCGT on-road, but the fact is...that's another race car that I can't really get much enjoyment out of "on a whim." Driving an on-road car around your local street isn't real satisfying - I found that out with my first hobby-grade R/C car, last year.

Plus, the Flux is an 8th scale truck. It's big! I can take it to the track, or I can bash it around in the large open dirt areas near our house, where they're tearing up the ground for future development (right now only utility vehicles and four-wheelers go that way) and creating perfect terrain for a monster truck. I just decided that I'll get a lot more mileage out of a monster truck than anything else I could buy. I look at the Mini-Z as an example - except for tooling around with it between off-road heats at OC/RC (where I got turned on to the things), I haven't driven my Z enough to make it a worthwhile purchase. I like it and I'll keep it, but it's not something I will use a lot. I don't have that fear about the Savage...I know I'll get a lot of entertainment value out of it. I'd better, because it is NOT cheap - but judging by the forum feedback and reviews, this is a purchase I doubt I'll regret. If you haven't seen it, enjoy this official promotional video from HPI - I think you'll understand the attraction.

Eventually, I'll get into on-road with RCGT because I really like that concept and I think the cars look awesome - but that will depend largely on how convenient it is for me to get down to the new West Coast R/C track, which sounds like it's shaping up to be a really first-rate facility, when it opens this summer.

Look for detailed post with photos after I receive the thing, next week. Also, I want to wish all the drivers who read this blog (even though the updates haven't been real robust lately) that are attending the Hot Rod Hobbies Shootout this weekend good luck - if not for the 11th being my wedding anniversary, I'd be out there mixing it up, too!
